Yes to dope tests, no to drugs: Panjab University pupils must sign pledge

CHANDIGARH: Panjab University students have to give an undertaking at the time of admission to stay away from drugs and submit to medical tests at random. This mandatory declaration binds students and their parents to acknowledge university’s zero-tolerance policy on drugs, alcohol and tobacco – both in hostels and on campus.According to new rules, students must consent to undergo random drug testing – including breath, blood or urine analysis – if deemed necessary by Panjab University (PU) authorities. The move is in line with a University Grants Commission advisory, calling on all higher educational institutions to implement anti-drug measures. It recommended obtaining written commitments from students, creating awareness, and strengthening surveillance systems to prevent substance abuse. The university’s new undertaking warns of strict disciplinary action, including suspension, expulsion or legal proceedings against students found in possession of or involved in consumption or distribution of banned substances.PU authorities have also introduced compulsory guest registration in hostels and are in the process of tightening access control.Officials said the anti-drug undertaking was part of a broader crackdown to safeguard campus environment and student wellbeing. “This isn’t just about one incident. The undertaking, awareness drives and improved monitoring are part of a systematic effort to make PU a safe and drug-free campus,” said a senior official.PU has instructed all departments and hostel wardens to collect signed undertakings from students and their parents before finalizing admissions. The move comes after the death of an outsider of a suspected drug overdose in a PU boys’ hostel in Nov. The case triggered scrutiny, especially after a student and a former student were arrested.
