The Karnataka government on July 22 approved setting up residential schools for children of construction workers in 31 districts, as proposed by the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board, to offer education from class 6 to 12.
An order issued by the Labour Department stated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced in the 2025-26 budget about setting up residential schools for the children of construction workers in 31 districts of the State to provide them quality education for free. As a prelude, the Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board, in its 44th meeting on March 1, had proposed setting up of such schools for the children of beneficiaries of the Board.
What each school will have in terms of facilities
Following the budget announcement, the Board Secretary and the CEO, on April 28, proposed to the government to establish residential schools at a cost of ₹1,125.25 crore.
Each school would have one room each for every class, rooms for laboratory, library, multi-tasking, sports, and an office. They would also have separate hostel buildings for boys and girls, a dining hall, kitchen, residential quarters for teachers, compound wall, along with necessary furniture and other equipment. Each residential school would come up on 83,073 sqft area (close to 2 acres), the Board told the government.
Maintenance by the Board
Approving the proposal, the government order stated that the Board should undertake construction of buildings from its funds. The schools will be maintained by the Board.
Specific sums have been earmarked for furniture (₹3 crore), and for laboratory equipment (₹75 lakh), by the government.
