As many as 1,000 persons will be presenting vachanas (verses touching upon philosophical and spiritual topics) of Basavanna in a programme titled ‘Savidara Vachana’ to mark Basava Jayanti celebrations at Allama Prabhu Park in Shivamogga on May 9. The group will present 38 vachanas in the programme.
Briefing about the programme at a press conference in Shivamogga on May 6, Mallikarjuna Murugharajendra Swamy of Bekkina Kalmatha said that it was an innovative programme to spread the message and essence of vachanas among the people. “Vachanas are defined as verses of people who practised what they preached. Shivamogga is a land of more than 40 sharanas who were part of the vachana movement led by Basavanna in the 12th century. The programme will set a record for the maximum number of people reciting vachanas. They will be doing so from a specially designed stage,” the seer said.
Basava Marulasidda Swamy of Basava Kendra said that the programme received an impressive response. “More than 1,200 persons registered to take part in the programme. Among them are people from outside Karnataka, and those who have come from overseas,” he said.
Former MLC S. Rudre Gowda, who heads the committee to celebrate Basava Jayanti, said that the singers would present the vachanas as composed by noted singer and music director late C. Ashwath. A team of expert singers, including Nagaraj Guruguha, Janardana (Janni), K. Yuvaraj, and Humayun Harlapu, had been training the singers. “We are expecting a good audience for the programme that would begin at 5.30 p.m. on May 9,” he said.
MLC Dhananjay Sarji, secretary of organising committee Jyoti Prakash, and treasurer H.C. Yogesh were present at the press conference.
