A case of cholera has been confirmed in Thalavady in Kuttanad. The patient, identified as Raghu P.G. of Ward VI in Thalavady grama panchayat, was admitted to a private hospital in Thiruvalla and is on ventilator support.
“Cholera has been confirmed in one person, though a test result is awaited. The patient has comorbidities and is in a critical condition. The Health department has initiated measures to prevent the spread of the disease,” said District Medical Officer Jamuna Varghese.
The Health department and the local panchayat have launched disease surveillance and sanitisation operations on a war footing in Thalavady. Officials said health workers had collected water samples from wells and other waterbodies in the region and sent them for testing.
Raghu was initially hospitalised with fever and diarrhoea at a private hospital. After his condition worsened, he was shifted to the hospital in Thiruvalla.
