Residents of Anna Nagar have expressed concern over frequent leaks in the pumping lines of the underground drainage network on Sardar Patel Street. The recurring issue has raised alarms about potential health hazards.
The leaks have become a regular occurrence with many residents reporting sewage overflows in the area. The pipes burst several times at different locations along the stretch last month. Although the civic body had been plugging the leaks, a long-term solution had not been found. There were leaks in over 10 spots in the sewers, which are reportedly located around 12 feet below the ground level.
It is said that these pipes were laid more than 40 years ago and had become rusty and worn out. “The sewer lines are breaking down frequently, unable to withstand the pressure. The pipelines need to be replaced, considering they have become old,” said Vigneshwar, a resident.
Residents said because of the leaks in the sewer lines, a few minor incidents of drinking water contamination were reported, causing health risks. They urged the officials to take action as the situation might get worse during monsoon. Activists said that frequent incidents of minor seepage and overflowing manholes were being reported at several areas in the city. “The issue continues to crop up very frequently. The civic body should devise a comprehensive plan to find a permanent solution to the problem,” said N. Jamaludeen, a civic activist.
A senior Corporation official said such pipeline bursts occur because the pressure build-up inside the main pumping line. The efficiency of the sewage pipes would be checked and the leaks identified. Steps would be taken to replace the damaged pipes as a permanent solution. A detailed project report would be prepared soon, he added.
