GUWAHATI The Assam Police have arrested 16 people for illegal cattle slaughter during Eid-ul-Adha on June 7, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday (June 8, 2025).

He said five illegal cattle slaughter sites, all in southern Assam’s Barak Valley, were uncovered during the festival. Three of these were in the Cachar district’s Gumrah, Silchar, and Lakhipur and two in the Karimganj district’s Badarpur and Banga.

Nine of the 16 people arrested were from the Cachar district and seven from Sribhumi.

There were five cases of cattle parts found, including near Guwahati’s Cotton University, Dhubri, Hojai, and Sribhumi districts.

“While our Constitution guarantees the right to religious freedom, it equally upholds the rule of law and public order. This Eid-ul-Adha, disturbing incidents of illegal cattle slaughter and recovery of cattle parts were reported from multiple locations across Assam,” Mr. Sarma posted on X.

He said the Assam Government was “committed to preserving communal harmony, but not at the cost of lawlessness or cruelty”. He warned violators, irrespective of faith or background, of strict action.
