Two I-girders launched for building the 3.15 km flyover under the Chennai Metro Rail’s phase II corridor in Manapakkam crashed on Thursday (June 12, 2025) night, killing one person who was riding a two-wheeler on the road below. Till late in the night, police personnel and Chennai Metro Rail workers were involved in removing the girders and retrieving the body of the person whose identity was yet to be known.

Around 9.45 p.m., the I-girders collapsed from the viaduct at Manapakkam. The incident resulted in heavy traffic congestion in the area for quite some time. Chennai Metro Rail has been constructing a double deck corridor on Mount Poonamallee Road. While the flyover, which connects Mugalivakkam with MIOT Hospital, is being constructed on level 1, the Chennai Metro Rail’s elevated stretch for corridor 5 (Madhavaram to Sholinganallur) is coming up on level 2.

According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the girders were launched a week ago for the flyover work. One of the supporting A-frames gave way leading to the girders falling. Investigation will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the collapse, officials said

The length of the I-girder is 33.3 metres. Early this month, CMRL launched a 33.3 metre U-girder for the viaduct above the flyover.
