A fibroid mass weighing 27 kg was removed from a 45-year-old woman patient at the Meenakshi Hospital, Thanjavur.
According to the Senior Consultant, Gynaecology, the woman, mother of two children, had approached the hospital at a critical stage as she began experiencing severe breathing difficulties and could neither sit nor lie down without enormous difficulty.
Subsequently, she was operated upon and the mass was removed by a team of doctors. “The surgery proceeded without complications. However, due to the extensive network of blood vessels connected to the mass, there was significant blood loss,” Dr. Nirmala added.
The patient remained intubated for some days as her lungs needed time to adjust to the new position since the mass was removed along with the uterus, ovaries, pelvic lymph nodes, and omentum.
