The Sholinghur Town police on Saturday shot and arrested B. Prabhu, 30, the prime suspect in the murder of a 55-year-old PMK local youth wing president, at a hideout in SIPCOT complex in Ranipet.
The police said Prabhu was shot at when he tried to shoot Sholinghur inspector S. Ramachandran. The suspect, a butcher, was held along with his accomplice K. Madhavan, 22. The incident occurred around 4.45 p.m.
The police said the victim K. Chakaravarthy, a lawyer, represented suspects involved in criminal cases at the Sholinghur court. Earlier, the police suspected that Chakaravarthy fell from his two-wheeler when he was returning home on June 12 and died of injuries. However, based on the post-mortem report, which revealed bullet wounds on the body, the police began to suspect a case of murder.
Subsequently, the police analysed closed-circuit television camera footage near the crime scene. “We identified Prabhu as the prime suspect from the footage,” Vivekananda Shukla, Superintendent of Police (Ranipet), told The Hindu.
Special teams were formed to nab the suspects. “The teams traced the duo to their hideout at the SIPCOT complex,” Mr. Shukla added. When the police tried to arrest the suspects, Prabhu fired at them with a country-made gun. They shot Prabhu in the left leg. He was rushed to the Government Taluk Hospital in Walajah, where doctors said his condition is stable. A case has been registered, and the duo was arrested. Police also seized the country-made gun.
Investigation revealed that Prabhu and Madhavan were from Rendadi village. Chakaravarthy was involved in obtaining conditional bail for an accused who was allegedly involved in the murder of K. Srinivasan, 45, a relative of Prabhu. Chakaravarthy did not heed Prabhu’s warning not to represent the accused in the case. This led to the lawyer being killed, the police said.
