Gig workers demand minimum wages, legal recognition

by AutoTrendly

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU), on Friday, urged the State government to ensure minimum wages, legal recognition, and comprehensive welfare schemes, for gig and platform workers.

The demands were raised during a stakeholders’ consultation meeting, where Labour and Employment Minister Vivek Venkataswamy announced the formation of a Welfare Board and drafting of a comprehensive policy for platform-based gig workers.

TGPWU members pointed out that the key demands put forward include minimum wage guarantee for all gig workers such as drivers, and delivery partners, as well as their registration and legal recognition to ensure coverage under welfare provisions. The union also called for algorithmic transparency from platform companies and a tripartite board with equal representation from workers, government, and companies.

“When we say minimum wage, we mean that there should be a minimum amount for each trip. Each type of gig work differs in nature,” said Shaik Salauddin of TGPWU.
