The Indian Federation of Women Lawyers, Karnataka, held its monthly lecture on earlier this week, on ‘Gender Composition in Higher Judiciary.’

Senior Advocates of the Karnataka High Court and other members emphasized the urgent need for meaningful representation of women in the judiciary to promote gender equality and justice.

They argued that a diverse bench, inclusive of more women, contributes to nuanced and equitable judgments and enhances perceptions of fairness and impartiality.

The forum called for a transparent selection process for judicial appointments, including written exams and viva voce. It recommended reserving 50% of posts in the higher Judiciary for women. Additionally, they urged that all panels of statutory bodies, boards, and government institutions to ensure 50% representation for women advocates.
