A 40-year-old farmer and his 14-year-old son drowned in a farm pond in Malagali village near Saundatti in Belagavi district on Sunday.
Their names were given as Basavaraj Kengeri and his son Dhareppa Kengeri.
Basavaraj, who was spraying pesticides on crops, saw that his son Dhareppa and his friend Bhagappa Sannakki were drowning in the pond.
He tried to save them but drowned instead. Other farmers managed to save Bhagappa Sannakki but could not rescue Basavaraj and Dhareppa.
A case has been registered.
