A 30-year-old engineer was arrested by the Ariyur police in Vellore on Tuesday (July 22, 2025) on charges of dowry harassment and domestic violence.

The police said the arrested person, B. Khaja Rafik, is a marine engineer who also runs an air-conditioner workshop in Vellore. He married A. Nargis, 21, in 2023. The couple had been living in Rafik’s house in Saduperi, near the Fort Complex in Vellore. Since then, Rafik and his parents have allegedly been demanding additional dowry from her. Rafik’s father is a sub-inspector at the Cheyyar police station.

In her complaint, Nargis said that her parents had taken loans to give Rafik’s family 30 sovereigns of gold, ₹1.5 lakh for buying a vehicle, and ₹3 lakh for home appliances, besides spending ₹10 lakh for the wedding. Despite this, the husband and his parents demanded more dowry from her family.

Nargis suffered a spinal cord injury and fractures in her legs after falling from the terrace of the house last week. She has accused her husband of pushing her off the terrace following a heated argument over additional dowry. However, Rafik and his parents have denied the allegations.

On Monday (July 21), Nargis, who was on a stretcher, met Collector V.R. Subbulaxmi along with her parents at the weekly grievances meeting, where she detailed her ordeal.

Following the Collector’s intervention, the Ariyur police began investigating Nargis’ allegations against her husband. Rafik was later arrested, and a probe is currently under way.
