Organs harvested by doctors at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) from a 51-year-old man, who met with a road accident and was declared brain dead, helped save lives this week.
According to a press release, the patient from Lalgudi had been referred to the Emergency Department of MGMGH after he suffered grievous head injuries in a road accident late at night on July 25.
When the patient did not respond to treatment, he was declared brain dead at 6.08 a.m on July 27. Upon being counselled, the grieving family agreed to donate his organs.
As per the norms of Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (Transtan), the government hospital’s surgeons harvested the patient’s liver, kidneys, cornea, and skin.
The kidneys were donated to patients undergoing renal treatment at private hospitals in Tiruchi and Pudukottai. The liver and corneas were received by beneficiaries at a private hospital in Chennai while the skin was given to a patient in Madurai, said the release.
