The new generation of Malayalam filmmakers has reinvented the narrative style that kept multidimensional aspects of characters in cinema intact, K. Jayakumar, former Chief Secretary and writer, has said.
He was inaugurating the Ivanios Film Festival 2025 and delivering the MT Memorial Lecture at Mar Ivanios College, Nalanchira, here recently.
Mr. Jayakumar said inspiration for such character depictions that rejected ‘flat’ appearances might have been drawn from doyens such as M.T. Vasudevan Nair. MT was always in search of visual opportunities for silence, and his dialogues explored multiple meanings. MT rejected the norm of characters talking endlessly throughout the narrative, he said.
The festival also paid tributes to filmmaker Shaji N. Karun. R. Sarath, film director and long-time associate of the filmmaker, remembered him as one of the greatest director-cinematographers who exploited the infinite possibilities of natural lighting in cinema.
The festival was organised by the college’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communication in association with the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy.
College Principal Meera George and Chalachitra Academy secretary C. Ajoy were present.
