Heavy rains: IMD issues alert for Malnad region in Karnataka

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of very heavy rainfall for the next few days, particularly on Monday, August 18, in south interior Karnataka, with a red alert sounded for some districts.

The warning issued by the IMD stated that there are chances of very heavy rains and strong surface winds in the region on August 17, 18, and 19.

The IMD has sounded an orange alert in Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts on Sunday, August 17, and a red alert for Monday, August 18. For Hassan, the department issued a yellow alert on Sunday and an orange alert on Monday.

A red alert warns of extremely heavy rainfall (above 204.5 mm), and an orange alert suggests very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm.

Advisory note

In view of the IMD warnings, the Chikkamagaluru district administration has issued an advisory note to the residents and the tourists visiting the district.

Deputy Commissioner C.N. Meena Nagaraj said, “There are chances of landslips in vulnerable areas of the district. The people have to be alert and take precautions to avoid any untoward incidents. The people visiting the district as tourists and those taking trekking expeditions need to be extra cautious.”

The Deputy Commissioner also appealed to the public to contact the helpline number 08262-238950 in case of any emergency.
