Coinciding with the golden jubilee celebrations of Siddhartha Academy of General and Technical Education, the Department of Physics in Parvathaneni Brahmayya Siddhartha College of Arts and Science organised an exhibition on the theme “Atoms in the Service of Nation”. The event, organised in collaboration with Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR)-Kalpakkam, started on September 8 will conclude on Friday (September 12).

The exhibition comprised 22 live models, four panels and 45 charts elaborating and explaining the concept behind the exhibits. A team of three scientists, with the help of supporting staff from the college arranged the exhibits. A steady stream of students from schools and colleges in and around Vijayawada has been visiting the place.

The young visitors were explained how nuclear energy emerged from splitting large atoms (fission) or by combining small atoms (fusion), releasing the heat used to generate electricity in a process similar to a steam generator. Trained student volunteers explained that a nuclear reactor houses and controls the fission reaction inside a power plant, where it boils water into steam to turn a turbine connected to a generator, producing electricity.

The objective of the event is to create awareness on the nuclear energy and the many ways it powers our lives, said the organisers.
