Former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda has urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to increase the compensation to the families of the deceased in the Hassan accident to ₹10 lakh. The government has announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh.
Mr. Deve Gowda spoke to the media after visiting the HIMS in Hassan, where the injured are undergoing treatment. The former Prime Minister stated that a majority of the dead and injured were youth and earning members of their families.
“I appeal to the Chief Minister to increase the relief to families of the deceased to ₹10 lakh,” he stated. Further, he said that the JD(S) would give a compensation of ₹1 lakh each to families of the deceased and ₹25,000 to the seriously injured.
Meanwhile, former Minister H.D. Revanna has said the incident could have been avoided if the police had taken enough care.
He maintained that the police should have slowed down the traffic by placing barricades about 500 m on either side of the place where the procession was being held.
The incident occurred on NH 373, and of the four lanes, the procession was restricted to two lanes. “The goods vehicle hit the crowd after crossing over the divider. If there was no divider, there could have been many more deaths,” he said.
