The Mylapore police on Friday (November 14, 2025) arrested a 56-year-old tea shop owner on charges of beating a stray dog to death and dumping it in a garbage bin after the animal allegedly attempted to bite him and a customer.
The police said the accused has been identified as Mohan, 56, who runs a tea shop on Bazaar Road in Mylapore. On Thursday (November 13), an elderly man who came to his shop was reportedly chased by a stray dog that attempted to bite him. Mohan tried to drive the dog away. At that moment, the dog tried to bite Mohan as well, the police said.
Angered by this, Mohan took a stick and repeatedly beat the dog to death, then dumped the body in a nearby garbage bin, according to the police. A video of the shocking incident went viral on social media.
Keerthana, an animal welfare activist from Thiruvanmiyur, filed a complaint at the Mylapore police station, based on which the police registered a case against Mohan under Section 325 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (whoever commits mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming or rendering useless any animal shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to five years, or with fine, or with both).
He was arrested by the Mylapore police and produced before a magistrate court for remand. The body of the stray dog was sent for post-mortem to the Government Veterinary Hospital, Vepery.
