Charlie Kirk, a well-known right-wing activist, was shot dead while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10. The shooting reportedly happened around midday during an outdoor event on campus.
A bullet struck the 31-year-old in the neck, and he died soon after. Police called it a targeted attack though the motive is still unclear. Authorities briefly held two suspects but later released them.
A large search is now underway for the gunman. Local officials described the killing as a political assassination. US President Donald Trump strongly condemned the attack.
Charlie Kirk often faced controversies during his career. The co-founder of Turning Point USA was known for using sharp and provocative language against liberal politicians, activists and institutions.
Critics accused him and his group of supporting or encouraging far-right voices though he denied any formal ties. He was also criticised for spreading misleading claims about protests, immigration and elections.
Kirk frequently clashed with liberal media and commentators. He opposed diversity and inclusion measures.
Charlie Kirk has a massive social media following. He has 5.6 million followers on Twitter (now X) and 9.1 million on Instagram.
Social media reactions
Social media has been vocal about Charlie Kirk since his assassination. Many users referred to his support of the Second Amendment and gun rights.
“You reap what you sow. Galatians 6:7-9,” wrote one user while another posted, “Live by the sword, die by the sword.”
“I don’t condone what happened because violence begets violence. But, this was my first thought… live by the gun (and justify gun deaths so you can), die by the gun,” commented another.
Another user wrote, “He would be happy with the way he died. He would say, ‘It is worth it’.”
Many others condoned his death even though they did not agree with him on his political views.
“At least, he was willing to sacrifice himself for their beliefs. I was not a fan, but I don’t think he deserved this,” wrote one of them.
Another wrote, “I hate violence. This kid got wrapped up in making money through hate speech. This outcome isn’t surprising to many. Late stage capitalism will claim many more victims, I fear.”
“He supported the 2nd amendment and the right to bare arms against a tyrannical government. Not to murder people in broad daylight,” posted another.
There were others who commented on Kirk’s impact.
“This man was a hero! This is so sad,” came from one of them.
